2012 Scholarships
The Manieri Jazz & Swing music endowment of the Anacortes Public Library Foundation is offering scholarships in three categories:
- College Student Scholarship - up to $1000 for music students who are active in jazz / swing performance and who will be attending college during academic year 2012-13;
- Jazz Camp Scholarship - up to $500 to students who want to attend a music camp during summer 2012 or academic year 2012-13; and
- Teacher's Continuing Education Scholarship - up to $500 for music teachers interested in getting credits or clock hours in jazz / swing education during summer 2012 or academic year 2012-13.
Students and teachers of Western Skagit County may apply. Priority will be given to students and teachers of the Anacortes School District.
Applications are available on this website, through band and choir teachers, or at the Anacortes Public Library.
Deadlines for postmarked applications are:
- March 31, 2012 for the College Student Scholarship; winners will be notified by May 1;
- March 31, 2012 for the Teacher's Continuing Education Scholarship; winners will be notified by May 1;
- May 1, 2012 for the Jazz Camp Scholarship; winners will be notified by June 1.
Scholarship winners will be featured in our 2nd Sunday Jazz at the Library performance.

The Manieri Jazz & Swing Endowment of the Anacortes Public Library announces the winners of scholarships to students of Western Skagit County who are active in jazz and swing music. The endowment received a number of worthy student applications but no teacher applicants so additional awards have been made to students.

College Scholarship:

Sterling Laws : $1000
Sterling is an AHS Senior who plays drums. He plays with the AHS Jazz Band & Jazz Choir, in his own group "The Violins", and in numerous other venues. He has three glowing letters of recommendation. He will be attending WWU to earn a BA in Music Performance and wants to "make an impact in the music industry." |

Dan Crawford: $500
Dan is an AHS Senior who plays trumpet. He is a lead trumpet player in the AHS Jazz Band and has played numerous gigs with them, and also plays in the Fidalgo Youth Symphony. He has three strong letters of recommendation. He plans to attend the UW and study both Electrical Engineering and Music. |

Sarah Tisinger: $500
Sarah is a singer and is currently President of the AHS Choir and Jazz Choir. She has performed and recently won a "Jazz Soloist" award for a scat solo at the Pasco jazz festival. She has three very enthusiastic letters of recommendation. She will be attending Pace University with a Major in Vocal Performance. |

Hannah Eger: $500
Hannah is a Skagit Valley College student who plays tenor and alto sax and also piano. She plays with the SVC Jazz Band and the Skagit Community Band, and has performed at the APLJC 2nd Sunday twice. She has a three strong letters of recommendation. She teaches piano lessons to private students. She is currently attending SVC, working towards an MA in Music and wants to be a music teacher. |

Connor Darrow: $500
Connor is a 10th Grade Trumpet player (also French Horn and Classical Guitar) in the Anacortes High School Jazz Band, the Fidalgo Youth Symphony, and his church youth jazz ensemble & adult classical orchestra. He has three strong letters of recommendation. He plans to go to the UW and Major in Law Enforcement with a Minor in Music. He will attend the Jazz Port Townsend Camp this July. |

Ethan Donovan: $500
Ethan is a La Venture Middle school student who clearly has had music as his central pursuit since he was about 7 years old. He plays guitar in the La Venture Middle School Jazz Ensemble, and has recently taken up the drums when their regular drummer left suddenly. He has three glowing recommendations. He will go to the Blaine Jazz Festival Camp this July. |
The Manieri Endowment Advisory Board and the Jazz Committee honored the scholarship winners at their meeting on Monday, June 6, 5pm, at the Anacortes Public Library. |
